Can I connect a hand held mic to my DVX100B?

In haste, I had to run to Radio Shack to purchase a microphone for a friend who was shooting a video ON THE SPOT…like ASAP. RS was the only store around within distance so I ran there and asked the salesperson if they had microphones I could connect to the Panasonic DVX-100B (I’m an editor & don’t know much about microphones). The salesperson APPEARED to know what he was talking about and I walked away feeling smug that I had gotten us out of a tight jam.

Wrong!
Wrong!

The entire crew almost tore my limbs off and I shuffled away in tears while one of the film crew took off looking for a microphone.

Needless to say, had I known better, this mistake would not have happened and I certainly don’t want it to happen again. I would like to know if there is a way to connect the microphone that I purchased can be used somehow. If not, I shall return it but if so, perhaps I can at least know what to look for/do in case this should ever be required again.

Thanks in advance.

This is the mic I bought and I guess if you are answering this question, you perhaps already know how to use the DVX 100 B.

I agree with SSP Bowl Dude.

The Panasonic AG-DVX100 (a/b) has XLR audio in connectors. With the correct cable, the mic will work.

But the mic you linked us to is a handheld mic typically used for singers or interviews. An XLR mic cable (Radio Shack typically carries them) would have been appropriate.

We don’t know what the shoot was for.

It is possible they needed a shotgun mic. Radio Shack does not carry shotgun mics.

It is possible they needed a clip on (lavaliere) – Radio Shack carries some – but none that would work directly with the DVX100.

It is possible they needed a stereo condenser mic. Radio Shack does not carry stereo condenser mics that use XLR connectors.

If either of these were required they should have been specified.

Last time I checked, the mics are the responsibility of the audio person – not the editor. If there was no audio person, then the production assistant. Ultimately, it is the Producer’s fault for neglecting to have such basic equipment available.

Thank you so much! I feel better knowing at least the guy at RS knew what he was talking about.
